Garlic Pepper Beef From the Manassas Gourmet Club Siamese Surprise Dinner. Serves 4
Ingredients
  • 1lb Beef Flank Steak, partially frozen
  • 4 Garlic Cloves
  • 1/2C Lightly Packed Cilantro Leaves
  • 1Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 1/2Tbsp Water
  • 1 1/4tsp Coarsely Ground Black Pepper
  • 1/2tsp Sugar
  • 1/3C Water
  • 4tsp Fish Sauce
  • 1/2tsp Cornstarch
  • 3Tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • 1Tbsp Water
  • 1 Sm Obion, halved lengthwise, cut into 8 wedges
Instructions
  1. Cut steak on the diagonal into thin slices
  2. Place in a medium-size bowl
  3. In a mortar, pound garlic and 1/4 cup of the cilantro leaves to a paste
  4. Stir in soy sauce, 1 1/2 tbsp water, pepper and sugar, spoon onto steak.
  5. Let stand 30 minutes
  6. Combine 1/3 cup water and fish oil in small bowl and set aside.
  7. Blend cornstarch and remaining 1 tbsp water in a separate bowl and set aside
  8. Heat a wok over high heat, add oil and heat.
  9. Add steak, cook, stirring until no longer pink.
  10. Add fish sauce mixture and onion. Cook stirring for 1 minute
  11. Stir cornstarch mixture to blend in cornstarch that has settled and add to wok.
  12. Cook stirring until sauce thickens slightly
  13. Spoon onto heated platter, arrange remaining cilantro leaves in center.
