Butter Keeflies
Light dough with nut filling Lori's Mom introduced us to this recipe handed down through her Hungarian family. Keeflies instantly became a favorite made each Christmas. These keep well or may be frozen
Ingredients
Dough
  • 4C Flour
  • 1/2C Sugar
  • 1tsp Salt
  • 3 Egg Yolks, reserve whites
  • 1/2C Butter
  • 1/2Pint Sour Cream
Filling
  • 1lb Walnut meats chopped fine
  • 3/4C Milk
  • 1C Sugar
  • 3 Egg Whites
  • 1tsp Vanilla
  • Confectioners Sugar
Instructions
  1. Make dough first
  2. Combine flour, sugar and salt.
  3. Blend in butter.
  4. In center put egg yolks and sour cream. Fold ingredients together.
  5. Shape into balls about the size of walnuts
  6. Refrigerate 3 hours or overnight
  7. Make Filling - Put nuts, milk, sugar, and egg whites in a sauce pan.
  8. Cook together until slightly thickened, stirring constantly.
  9. Add vanilla
  10. Cool, may be refrigerated.
  11. Roll individual balls of dough out on floured board.
  12. Place 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp of nut filling on dough
  13. Roll and crimp ends, curving slightly, so that it looks kind of like a wrapped candy.
  14. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes
  15. Dust with confectioners sugar.
